Religious Education in a Catholic School takes place in two distinct but complementary contexts:

  • The religious life of the school
  • The classroom teaching of Religious Education.

The religious life of the school can be understood in four areas:

  • Evangelisation— being a community that builds ‘God’s Kingdom’
  • Religious Identity and Culture—the school’s special saints, celebrations and religious history.
  • Prayer and Worship—the school’s prayer in classes, in the church and as a whole community at Assembly.
  • Social Action—promoting and supporting the Catholic Aid agencies like Caritas, Catholic Mission, the local St Vincent de Paul Society etc.

The classroom teaching of Religious Education has a time allocation equivalent to 30 mins per day or 2.5 hours per week. Catholic Schools conduct lessons for 30mins more each day to account for this time allocation.

Brisbane Catholic Education publishes professional documents for teachers to support the classroom teaching of Religious Education. These documents are organised like syllabus and curriculum support documents for other Key Learning Areas to assist teachers in their professional duties.
