Teaching Writing at St Peter's

Following the success of the Multimodal project involving students from Year 4 and Year 6 in 2018, our school has been selected to participate in another study focusing on writing and the teaching of writing. The project involves researchers from Macquarie University, the University of Southern Queensland, the University of Wollongong and the University of Exeter in the UK. The focus year levels for this project will be Year 3 and Year 4.

Teachers and students will be invited to participate in the following:
  • Support the dissemination and completion of a questionnaire to all Year 3-6 students that aims to find out how student makes decisions when they write (approximately 30 minutes)
  • All teaching staff will engage with professional learning provided by the research team, including Professor Debra Myhill (University of Exeter, UK) who is a world-renowned researcher in this field.
Teachers directly involved in the project will:
  • Have four lessons related to the teaching of writing filmed through classroom observations (each lesson will be approximately 30 minutes therefore 2 hours in total)
  • Be interviewed over the course of the project (after each lesson for approximately 15 minutes therefore 1 hour in total)
  • Be involved in professional learning about the teaching of writing which includes coaching and collaboration in the classroom with the research team.
We are honoured to be invited to participate in such a prestigious study and would appreciate as many students as possible participating in the survey, to provide comprehensive data about writing at St Peter’s. Parent permission forms will be sent out to all students in Years 3-6 next week. Once these are returned, we will begin the first stage of the project by disseminating online surveys in classrooms.
